If therapy or counseling is connected to a court requirement, begin with the written instructions. Clarify what is required, which provider is acceptable, and what documentation is needed before enrolling.
Therapy, counseling, treatment, and evaluation
These words do not describe one universal court requirement. Therapy and counseling often refer to work with a mental health professional; treatment is a broader term. An evaluation is an assessment and may be requested separately from ongoing care. A class or education program may also be different from therapy.

Questions for the referring authority
Contact the court, attorney, probation officer, or other official named in the paperwork. Ask about deadlines, provider requirements, and whether approval is needed before beginning services. Keep the response and contact information with your own records. If wording is unclear, seek clarification before assuming a service will satisfy it.
Questions for the treatment provider
Ask whether the provider offers the requested service, what assessment is needed, and which documentation it can supply. Explain relevant deadlines. Clinical fit and legal acceptance are separate questions: a program may be able to provide useful care without meeting a specific order’s requirements.
Sharing documents and information
Ask for a secure way to share sensitive paperwork. Confirm who is allowed to receive attendance or other treatment information and which consent forms are needed. A general website message is a place to ask how to proceed, rather than attach detailed court or clinical records without instructions.
