Outpatient, inpatient, residential, and detox services play different roles. Use this comparison to prepare for a professional assessment and understand what each provider actually offers.

Compare the care setting

Setting What it means Questions to ask
Outpatient You attend scheduled care and leave the same day. What support is needed at home, and what is the attendance schedule?
Inpatient You stay overnight in a hospital or treatment setting for around-the-clock care. What medical or safety needs require this setting?
Residential You live at a treatment program. Services and medical support vary. What services are provided, and how is outside medical care arranged?
Withdrawal management / detox Care focused on withdrawal-related medical needs. Is a medical withdrawal assessment needed before other treatment?

Ask about safety and medical needs first

Describe current symptoms, substance use, previous withdrawal problems, and any recent hospital or treatment stays. Ask the clinician whether medical evaluation or a more supported setting is needed before outpatient care. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous; seek medical guidance before stopping or reducing alcohol when withdrawal may be a concern.

Consider life outside the program

Outpatient care means spending time away from the treatment setting. Discuss your living situation, available support, transportation, and the times of day that are hardest to manage. Ask what to do if symptoms change or you need help outside scheduled hours.

Compare specific programs after assessment

Ask each provider about its current services, staffing, attendance requirements, and care coordination. Inpatient and residential settings can differ in the medical support they provide. Outpatient programs also vary in intensity. A program name alone cannot tell you which services will be part of your care.

Plan the transition to the next stage

Before one service ends, confirm what comes next: appointments, records, medication follow-up, and transportation. Ask who is responsible for arranging referrals. Read the after-detox planning guide for practical transition questions.

Brave Path offers outpatient care and can discuss part-time day treatment and full-time day treatment. It is not an emergency, detox, or inpatient service.
