Keep legal questions and ongoing care connected
A Section 35 commitment is a Massachusetts civil court process. Families often also need help understanding what support may follow treatment. Order-specific questions belong with the court or legal counsel; questions about ongoing clinical care belong with the treating team and receiving providers. Ask about discharge planning
When you are authorized to participate, ask who coordinates follow-up, what level of care is recommended, and whether appointments have been arranged. Clarify how medication information and records will reach the next provider with the required consent. The goal is to know the next concrete step rather than assume that discharge alone completes the care plan.
Discuss what home will be like
Talk with the appropriate care team about transportation, daily responsibilities, and available support. Ask the person receiving care what help they want from family. If outpatient treatment is recommended, confirm that the receiving program can meet their needs and explain what happens outside scheduled hours.
